Description

The central park in Turnu Măgurele (called “Public Garden”), with an area of 24,861.00 square meters, was established in 1876 by a group of specialists from Bucharest, after a similar park in Vienna. In the park you can admire exotic trees such as: “Sophora japonica”, which blooms in August, a species of chestnut “Aesculum hipocastanum”, “Thuya” trees, bushes of “Paeonia arborea” with pink-pale flowers, as well as “Mahonia aquifolim” with yellow flowers and permanent leaves.

At the entrance to the park from Independence Boulevard is located the Independence Monument. Made in 1985 by the sculptor Constantin Schirliu, the monument is dedicated to the heroes of the War of Independence from 1877 to 1878. The ensemble in the form of a semicircle in plan, is a group of statues composed of 3 (three) soldiers from different “weapons”: infantry, navy and border guards. The sides of the monument contain bronze bas-reliefs, which illustrate the passage of the Romanian army across the Danube, the attack on Pleven, as well as scenes depicting wounded and cared for heroes by General Carol Davilla. Also here is presented the victory of the Romanian army in Pleven.

The presence of the monument in the Central Park of Turnu Măgurele is not accidental. During the War of Independence, important weapons and fodder depots were organized in the city for horses that were sent to the front. Hospitals were also set up in the city, Turnu Măgurele being one of the main points of support for military operations. On the bridge of ships arranged between Turnu Măgurele and Nicopole, food and ammunition were transported to the front, convoys of prisoners and wounded were sent to the country, Romanian weapons were returned after the victory against the Ottoman army. The role of Turnu Măgurele in the conflict that brought independence from the Ottomans, was a prominent one, at the end of the war most of the Russian troops passed through here.

The Independence Monument occupies an important place in the recent history and in the collective memory of Turnu Măgurele municipality, being inscribed in the List of Historical Monuments from Teleorman County, code LMI-III-m-B-14524
